Regenerative medicine is busy transforming the medical industry one injury and disease at a time. Unlike surgical procedures that use invasive methods to deliver less-than-stellar results, regenerative medicine can treat joint and back conditions simply by harnessing your own body’s natural healing capabilities. While we definitely understand the potential of regenerative medicine, the FDA has been slow to jump on board. It was just this November that the FDA finally announced a framework to address the growing role of regenerative medicine in the health care industry.

Stem cells and platelet-rich plasma in particular lead the way as transformative and cutting-edge regenerative therapies. Despite their potential for triggering deep, comprehensive, and long-lasting healing, the FDA has been hesitant to make regenerative medicine widely available to the general population. In November 2017, the FDA finally announced a comprehensive regenerative medicine policy framework to “spur innovation, efficient access to potentially transformative products, while ensuring safety and efficacy,” according to its press release.

As FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D. explained, “We’re at the beginning of a paradigm change in medicine with the promise of… adult stem cells [generating] replacements for cells that are lost to injury or disease. This is no longer the stuff of science fiction.” As such, the FDA created a framework in an effort to make science-based approaches more available while curbing the rise of cellular therapies from unscrupulous providers.

This is good news for patients around the country who could benefit from regenerative medicine treatments. The FDA has acknowledged that stem cell therapies have the potential to truly heal diseases and injuries. Now, the FDA is making changes that will help make legitimate and promising regenerative medicine practices more immediately available to the people who need them most.
