Hand Arthritis

Elaine’s Case Study: Stem Cell Procedure helps with arthritis of the hand

History of Joint Problems:

The patient is in her mid 60’s and has a history of degenerative arthritis on her mother’s side of the family, with their hands. In their later years, they had a lot of pain, restriction of motion and a lot of deformity. 15 years ago Elaine started to experience pain and loss of movement in her hands, in her thumb joints. She consulted with an orthopedic surgeon who said eventually she would need joint replacement surgery. She tried to put that in the back of her mind thinking she only wanted to do this one time, and was concerned about post surgery – how do you function for months afterwards? Then Elaine heard about the stem cell therapy and began investigating the procedure where you can regenerate, not operate. She then consulted with Dr. Grana and staff, and it was determined she was a good candidate for the Stem Cell Procedure.

The Stem Cell Procedure Solution:

Dr. Grana performed a Stem Cell Therapy using the patient’s own cells. Using a small needle, stems cells are collected by aspirating the bone marrow from the back of the patient’s pelvis, or by collecting fat cells from the abdomen.  Local anesthesia was used for minimal discomfort. The aspirate is then placed in a centrifuge, which spins it at a high speed to separate the stem cells from the rest of the bone marrow aspirate. The concentration of stem cells, called bone marrow aspiration concentrate (BMAC), was then injected close to the injured or diseased tissue using ultrasound or x-ray guidance. The Stem Cell Therapy treatment performed by Dr. Grana is very safe and effective. The treatment allows the body to take advantage of the normal healing pathways at a greatly accelerated rate.

Elaine’s Results:

In a 3.5-month post treatment interview, Elaine reported that about 3 weeks after the Stem Cell Therapy she started feeling less discomfort. At 3.5 months she felt 80% better than she did pre-treatment, and was experiencing no discomfort. She reports she has tremendous functioning with no throbbing and no pain. “I have more strength, it’s fantastic. There is no more aching, my hands were terribly sore and aching, it’s all gone.”

When asked how the procedure was for her, Elaine said: “It was tolerable, the staff was very helpful, very informative, very comforting and talked me through it. It’s not something that is terribly distressing, you get through it and you know you are going to get results, so it’s worth it.”

When asked if she would recommend the Stem Cell Therapy to her friends, she said, “absolutely, absolutely!” For more information on Dr. Grana and Stem Cell Therapy in Tampa, Florida please contact the office at (813) 868-1659.
