Sciatica is a nerve condition that impacts approximately 10% to 40% of the population. It affects the sciatic nerve, which is the largest nerve in the body and runs from the lower back through the hips and down either leg.

When the sciatic nerve is compressed, irritated, or inflamed, it leads to symptoms like pain, numbness, weakness, and tingling along the path of the sciatic nerve. These symptoms are known as sciatica.

Unfortunately, treatments for sciatica are relatively limited. However, with recent medical advancements, sciatica patients have more non-surgical treatment options than ever before.

Non-Surgical Treatments For Sciatica

Sciatica is often successfully treated without surgery. Your physician may recommend some of the following non-surgical treatments to resolve pain and neurological symptoms stemming from sciatic nerve compression:

  • Physical therapy
  • Heat and cold therapy
  • Chiropractic care
  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Pain/anti-inflammatory medications

Stem Cell Therapy For Sciatica

When cases of sciatica persist despite at-home care, patients may consider regenerative treatments before turning to surgery. Stem cell therapy, in particular, can be highly effective in resolving sciatica symptoms by stimulating healing in the damaged tissue.

During stem cell therapy for sciatica, your doctor will first collect stem cells from either the back of the pelvis or the abdomen. Since stem cell therapy uses autologous cells, meaning that they come from the patient’s own body, there’s no risk of the body rejecting the newly developed tissue.

After harvesting the stem cells, your doctor will place the aspirate in a centrifuge to isolate the stem cells. This results in a concentration of stem cells that can be injected near the damaged tissue with guidance from x-ray or ultrasound technology.

Stem cells have remarkable regenerative abilities. So, in the weeks and months after undergoing stem cell therapy for sciatica, the stem cells will release growth factors that stimulate the body’s natural healing process. This results in the regeneration and recovery of the damaged tissue in and around the sciatic nerve.

At the Regenerative Orthopedic Institute, we’re pleased to offer stem cell therapy for a range of medical conditions, including sciatica. Contact us today to schedule a consultation!
