We just received this letter from one of our patients who was treated with stem cell therapy for chronic low back pain:

“My Name is Jeanne B. I am a 67 years old woman with high energy and a zest for life. I am very athletic and have participated in softball, golf, billiards, travel, yard work, playing cards, and more.

Several years ago I sustained a back injury which eventually caused degenerative disc disease and arthritis. Over the years I have had to give up softball, golf, and travelling. This past year I spent most of my time in pain, with little relief even though I was taking anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, and pain medication.

I wasn’t able to play billiards because of the repetitive bending to aim and shoot the ball. I was not able even to do puzzles because long periods of sitting caused pain. Even driving was difficult. I was thinking more about finding a way to sit without pain rather than concentrating on my driving.

Everything in my life was a chore. Standing, sitting, even laying down for more than 5 minutes was painful when I would move from one activity to another. It was time to try whatever could make life worth living again.

Eight weeks ago I had stem cell regenerative therapy. Wow! Within two weeks I noticed a difference in my pain level. I had more mobility without pain, and began to feel like life was worth living again.

In the past six weeks I completed a 1000 piece puzzle and I am playing billiards twice a week. Yesterday I spent an hour outside pruning the trees and cutting the hedge. All with no pain!

Now I can sleep all night. I have a little pain first thing in the morning but it quickly goes away once I begin walking around. Even cooking, washing clothes, and sitting long enough to watch a movie is comfortable.

Thank you so much Dr. Grana, and the staff at Regenerative Orthopedic Institute.”

When Jeanne came to us she had constant severe pain which she rated as an 8 in a 0-10 point pain scale (0 being no pain and 10 being the worst possible pain you can imagine). Also, she scored a 74 in a functional scale commonly used for patients with back pain called the Oswestry Disability Index (a 0-100 scale where a higher number means more dysfunction). Two months after her treatment, Jeanne rated her pain as a 1 and she scored a 14 in the Oswestry Disability Index.

We are extremely pleased to hear that this patient is doing so well after just one treatment with our specialized spine therapy using bone-marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells.  All without the risks and extended down time associated with spine surgery. We will continue to follow her, like we do with all our patients, at the 6-month and 12-month mark to collect more outcome data and to make sure she continues to do so well.
